Wednesday Word of the Week: AHOY-HOY

 

Well, it’s here again. Talk like a Pirate Day. If somehow you have managed to escape knowing that this parodic holiday exists, you can get the lowdown from good ole wikipedia. As part of the celebrations, the Writing Center has chosen “ahoy-hoy” as our word of the week.

NOT “ahoy”, but “ahoy-hoy”, Alexander Graham Bell’s preferred method for answering the phone. We still hear it from Montgomery Burns from time to time, insinuating that he learned to use the phone in the 1870s. At that time, “hello” was used as an exclamation of surprise. Imagine answering the phone with “WHOA!”…
